Paracheirodon axelrodi
This week’s Fish of the Week is the popular Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi). This colourful little fish is native to the upper Orinoco and Negro rivers in South America, and will reside in the middle of the water column in a well aquascaped aquarium. The cardinal tetra is very streamlined in appearance, displaying electric-blue and blood-red coloured bands from head to tail. These fish are very similar to the hugely popular neon tetra, the main difference being the red band stretches the entire length of the fish (whereas this red band stretches only half way on the neon). Cardinal tetras are best kept in shoals of at least 5 fish, but due to their small size (only growing to around 3cm in length), they can be kept in smaller aquariums too. To make sure these little fish aren’t lost in a large aquarium, these fish will happily shoal in large groups as well, and make for an eye-catching display of flashing red and blue. The humble cardinal tetra: a true gem for any aquarium!
