Trigonostigma heteromorpha

This week’s Fish of the Week is the Harlequin Rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha). This fish is native to the Blackwater forest streams of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and southern Thailand. Like other members of the Trigonostima genus (which literally means “triangle mark”), this small fish boasts metallic, copper/orange coloration with the distinctive black triangle marking. It’s a great beginner fish, being an undemanding fish to look after and relatively hardy, allowing it to thrive in a variety of water conditions. This small fish will grow to a maximum size of around 5cm and should be kept in shoals of at least 6 or more to see them at their best; in the wild they have been known to shoal in groups of over 100 fish, so the more the better! Harlequin rasboras will thrive in a heavily planted aquarium and will spend most of their time in the upper areas of your aquarium, making them a perfect addition to any freshwater setup.
