Keeping a variety of different fish species in an aquarium is one of the main draws to fishkeeping. But when different fish are kept together, it can lead to certain fish dominating feeding time. When feeding a mixed species tank, follow these steps to ensure all fish are able to get their food:
- Try feeding dry foods across the water surface to ensure maximum dispersal in the water. This should lower dominant species from crowding out a certain area of the tank.
- If feeding mixed foods, try feeding different foods at opposite ends of the aquarium. This creates a distraction for the boisterous feeders, allowing all fish the opportunity to feed. For example a floating pellet one end and a sinking pellet the other.
- For timid fish (or those with specialist diets), pre-soaking the food in water and use of a pipette / turkey baster can ensure the food is delivered as close to them as possible. A great example of this is the Elephantnose fish of the genus Gnathonemus rarely eat anything other than bloodworms. Defrosting frozen bloodworm in water and feeding using a pipette ensures the other fish do not get a chance to eat it before it sinks low enough for the elephantnose to feed.
