Kuhli Loach

Pangio spp

This week’s Fish of the Week is an unusual member of the loach family. The kuhli loach (Pangio spp) is a thin, eel-like fish which originates from southeast Asia. Like other loaches, it has a spine underneath its eye which protrudes and acts as a defence against predators. These fish can reach around 10cm (4 inches) in length, and should be kept in groups of six or more to encourage them out into the aquarium so you can see them at their best. Males and females are difficult to distinguish and are difficult to breed in captivity, but when this does occur, the female’s ovaries appear green due to the hundred or so green eggs she carries. These scale-less fish are very peaceful tank inhabitants, but may plunge for the occasional snail! However, if you’re prepared for a potential gastropod disappearance every now and then (and you’re not overly fond of your snails), these will make a great addition to your tank.
