Ram Cichlid

Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

This week, we’re heading to South America for our Fish of the Week. The ram cichlid (also commonly known as the dwarf butterfly cichlid and the German blue ram amongst others) is a very colourful, comparatively peaceful cichlid, originally from Venezuela and Colombia. They should be kept in pairs, but it’s easy to distinguish males from females, with males having three elongated dorsal fin rays. Both sexes of these attractive fish intensify in colour prior to spawning, and are known as substrate spawners, laying up to 300 eggs directly on rocks or in small indents dug into the gravel. Reaching around 6cm (2 inches) in length, ram cichlids do best in soft, acidic water but are adaptable, and make striking additions to a tropical tank.
