Zebrasoma flavescens
This week’s Fish of the Week is a firm favourite for marine keepers throughout the hobby. The yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) is, as its name suggests, bright yellow in colour, and is very easily identifiable. These attractive fish originate from Hawaii, and, being reef safe herbivores, aren’t coral-munchers like some other fish from this region. They can grow to around 20cm (8 inches) and do better in larger tanks with non-aggressive tank mates like clownfish (incidentally one of our earlier Fish of the Weeks). If being bright yellow isn’t quite enough to sell you on these beautiful fish, then perhaps their predator defence mechanisms might. At night, their bright yellow colouration fades to a dull brown colour to help them hide from predators, but this quickly returns after the sun rises. Additionally, like other members of the surgeonfish family, the yellow tang has two small spines on either side of its tail to defend against predators. Smart and savvy, the yellow tang has definitely earned its place as our Fish of the Week.
