If there was ever a group of fish that provided a dedicated and reliable aquarium service, species from the “Botia” loach family come top of the list. Their ability to eradicate a tank of snails is unparalleled, and there is enough diversity in this group to ensure a species for all aquariums. For their smallish size (about 7.5 cm as adults), distinct pattern and gusto for consuming gastropods, the zebra loach (Botia striata) earns Fish of the Week. Zebra loach aren’t particularly shy fish and can often be observed foraging for their next shelled snack, but even if your tank is snail free, they will happily consume sinking pellets. Most importantly, because of their peaceful nature, they won’t start munching on your more prized tank inhabitants!
